New at EuroEyes: The Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL®) – Optimal visual acuity you can customise yourself
Now available at EuroEyes Hamburg
At EuroEyes, we are setting new standards in refractive lens surgery: with the innovative Light Adjustable Lens, we now offer our patients a groundbreaking solution for individual vision correction after lens implantation – for a life with optimal visual acuity.
What is the LAL (Light Adjustable Lens)?
The LAL is a state-of-the-art intraocular lens (IOL) that can be precisely adjusted after implantation – without the need for further surgery. UV light is used to fine-tune the lens in order to precisely correct any remaining visual impairments.
Instead of delivering a fixed visual outcome, the LAL enables individual fine adjustment using special UV light treatments – tailored to your needs.
Cataract surgery can also offer the opportunity to correct other vision problems you may be experiencing, such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism (corneal curvature) or presbyopia (age-related long-sightedness: the ability to see clearly diminishes with age).

Special features of LAL
The first and only cataract lens that can be individually adjusted after surgery.
Adjustability offers qualified patients individually tailored refractive outcomes that cannot be achieved with non-adjustable IOLs.
The probability that patients will achieve 100% visual acuity without glasses within 6 months is twice as high.

Who is LAL particularly suitable for?
The Light Adjustable Lens eliminates cataracts and is ideal for:
For patients who want individual vision correction
LAL+ enables post-operative adjustments – including micro monovision – that are not possible with standard lenses. For patients who cannot tolerate residual errors
Even minor residual refractions after surgery can be disruptive. With LAL+, these can be corrected in a targeted and non-invasive manner. For patients with complex vision needs
Ideal for patients who have undergone previous refractive surgery (e.g. LASIK, SMILE) and now have age-related long-sightedness (presbyopia) or require cataract surgery. For patients with special requirements
In cases of retinal changes (e.g. epiretinal fibrosis, early macular degeneration) or occupational requirements (e.g. bus drivers, lorry drivers, taxi drivers, patients with epiretinal fibrosis) where multifocal lenses are unsuitable, LAL is often the better choice.People with a preference for monovision, for whom subsequent adjustment may be advisable.

Why is LAL a milestone for your vision?
Conventional lens implants have a fixed refractive power that cannot be changed. LAL+, on the other hand, allows non-invasive adjustments after surgery through targeted UV light treatments – for a tailor-made vision correction that is precisely tailored to your needs.
Residual refractive errors after lens implantation can affect satisfaction, especially in patients who have undergone previous laser eye surgery. LAL can be used to correct these blurred images in a targeted and safe manner, enabling us to achieve significantly better visual results and higher patient satisfaction.
So if, after the operation, you find that you would like to see clearly without glasses in another area of the practice (e.g. at the computer), this can be easily adjusted using UV radiation.
The Light Adjustable Lens is made from a special light-sensitive material that changes the shape and strength of your implanted lens in response to special ultraviolet (UV) light to optimise your vision.
In summary: The advantages of LAL+ from RxSight
Individual vision correction after surgery
Optimal fine adjustment, even for intermediate areas (EDOF-like)No further surgical intervention
The adjustment is easily done using special UV light.Fewer halos and glare
No light scattering as with multifocal lensesExcellent visual results
Very high patient satisfaction thanks to precise adjustmentTailored support
The vision result will be adjusted and finalised together with your doctor.
How the light-adjustable lens works
The light-adjustable lens has special light-sensitive molecules that allow it to adjust after surgery. The quick and gentle treatment uses a controlled beam of UV light from the Light Delivery Device™ (LDD™) to adjust the shape and strength of the lens, which determines how your eye focuses.
1. First light treatment
Approximately 2–3 weeks after the operation
2. Additional light treatments to optimise the visual result (up to 3 times, if desired)
Approximately 3 days after each previous light treatment (duration approx. 90 seconds per eye)
3. Lock-in treatments (2x required)
at intervals of approximately 3 days
Please wear UV protective glasses until the final adjustment has been made.
While your vision is still in the adjustment phase, you must wear RxSight UV protective glasses, which prevent UV light from altering your lens, in order to protect it until it has fully settled. You will wear these sunglasses for approximately 4–6 weeks. We will provide them to you at no additional cost. Visits to solariums are not permitted until the lens has fully settled!

Fixed and adjustable lenses compared
With other monofocal lenses, you must decide before your cataract surgery in which range you want to see clearly without glasses. Once implanted, these lenses cannot be changed; they are, so to speak, ‘fixed’.
However, the light-adjustable LAL lens is an adjustable lens. This means that you only need to decide on the LAL lens before your surgery. Everything else can be done at your leisure after your operation, without affecting the eye itself.
You and your surgeon then have the option of adjusting the lens and optimising your vision based on your individual preferences and lifestyle. This gives you vision that is tailored to your specific needs.
Questions and answers about the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)
In the USA, 225,000 Light Adjustable Lenses have been implanted since 2007 – and patients are very happy with them.
Due to the special lens structure of the Light Adjustable Lens, there are no halo effects or reduced contrast at certain distances. It may therefore be the better choice for professional drivers, for example, or for people who only need glasses for computer work.
In fact, you will no longer need glasses in many areas of life – thanks to the properties of LAL lenses, which are comparable to EDOF lenses.
As the lens is equipped with a special UV filter, the risk is extremely low. Nevertheless, you must wear UV protective glasses (which we will provide free of charge) for 4-6 weeks until your lens is finally fitted. Visits to solariums are not permitted until the lens is finalised!
No, the procedure is exactly the same as for other monofocal or trifocal lenses. The only (but significant) difference is the possibility of flexibly adjusting the lens later without further surgery.
The Light Adjustable Lens allows postoperative refraction to be readjusted by up to 2 dioptres (short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism).
