Presbyond Laser Blended Vision at EuroEyes

With the Presbyond Laser Blended Vision method, we now offer our patients a modern and safe laser eye treatment for presbyopia. Presbyopia affects everyone. It is a natural age-related decline in vision that usually occurs after the age of 40. The lens of the eye loses more and more flexibility and therefore can no longer depict the perceived image sharply on the retina. As a result, it becomes increasingly difficult and strenuous to see sharply at all distances – until finally it is no longer possible without the unloved glasses.

Professor Dan Reinstein (founder of the London Vision Clinic) has developed “Presbyond Laser Blended Vision”, a modern and innovative method of eye laser treatment for patients over 40, which avoids the need to replace the natural lens with an artificial lens. Professor Reinstein is internationally known for his outstanding achievements in the field of refractive surgery. EuroEyes has recently acquired the “London Vision Clinic”, the leading clinic for eye correction in England. Professor Reinstein will serve as Medical Director of the International Medical Advisory Board of the EuroEyes Group.

WHAT IS PRESBYOPIA?

Presbyopia literally means “old eye” and is the technical term for presbyopia. Unfortunately, aging affects the eye just as it affects any other part of the body. Beginning in early middle age, the lens in the eye begins to lose its ability to change shape and “zoom” from distance to near and back.

Since aging cannot be avoided, no one is immune from developing presbyopia. This then inevitably leads to the need for reading glasses or varifocals – if not treated.

What is special about this Eye Laser Method?

With the Presbyond Laser Blended Vision method, both eyes are separately optimised for distance and near vision. Of particular importance is the so-called “Blend Zone”, the intermediate area for the middle range of vision. With the help of detailed measurements, this zone is individually determined and optimised for you, so that you can see all details sharply in the near and far range as well as in the middle range after the treatment.

The depth of field is adjusted individually for each eye and the overlap of the images in the middle area is calculated very precisely for the patient. This unique “blend zone” makes it easier for the brain to merge the images from both eyes. This creates the familiar three-dimensional image – and most patients experience an immediate improvement in their vision. In addition, they usually get used to their new vision more quickly than with other surgical correction methods.

Presbyond laser Blend zone

Presbyond Blend Zone The “Blend Zone”, which is individually calculated for you, ensures that you can see sharply in all areas.
The majority of patients tolerate the procedure very well: up to 97%* (compared to only 59-67%** with monovision). Another and crucial advantage of Laser Blended Vision is that contrast sensitivity (night vision) and three-dimensional vision are fully preserved in almost all cases.

Is Laser Blended Vision the right Method for me?

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is very suitable for people with an active lifestyle who find glasses, varifocals and reading glasses or even contact lenses impractical and who want to see everything sharply without any aids. Another great advantage is that this method also eliminates previously existing visual defects such as short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism. In a personal consultation, we will determine together with you whether this method is the most suitable for you. The type and degree of your refractive error(s), the curvature and thickness of the cornea, as well as many other factors also play an important role. In addition, your tolerance for monovision and eye dominance will be tested.

The Treatment - Step by Step

Step 1: Create a flap.
A flap, a prepared layer of cornea, is created with a fast and highly precise femtosecond laser.

Step 2: Lifting the flap.
The flap is gently lifted, exposing the inner corneal tissue for treatment.

Step 3: Correction of the visual defect.
An excimer laser corrects the cornea, optimising the dominant eye for distance vision and the non-dominant eye for near vision.

Step 4: Folding back the flap.
The flap is then folded back to its original position, where it serves as a kind of natural bandage.

1. Non-binding, personal consultation

During a non-binding, personal consultation, your doctor will first clarify with you whether your eyes are generally suitable for the treatment. All relevant eye parameters will be measured.

2. Comprehensive preliminary Examination

Before the operation, a comprehensive medical examination will follow. Before this examination you should in any case refrain from wearing contact lenses, as these also change the shape of the cornea in the long term. You should not wear soft contact lenses for at least one week before the examination. In the case of hard contact lenses, the interval should be at least two weeks. Lenses should also not be worn for the same period of time before the operation.

On the day before the treatment as well as on the day of the treatment itself, you should refrain from using cosmetic products such as face creams, lotions, but also make-up and perfume. They can increase the risk of infection or contamination of the surgical field. You should clean the area around your eyes especially thoroughly on the morning of the treatment day

3. The Presbyond Surgery

On the day of the operation, you should wear comfortable clothing if possible. You can eat and drink normally, but should not smoke. For reasons of hygiene, you should wash your face thoroughly once again and remove any make-up residue completely. If you wish, you will also be given a sedative before the procedure.

Then the actual procedure takes place, which is performed on an outpatient basis and only takes about 20 minutes for both eyes. First of all, the surgeon will greet you and once again check your personal data before your corneal surface is anaesthetised with drops. To prevent you from blinking during the operation, you will be fitted with a so-called eyelid opener. The other eye will be covered during the procedure.

Next, the lenticle in the cornea is prepared using the VisuMax femtosecond laser. A contact lens adapted to the shape of the cornea is used to fix the eye. You will see a bright spot during these steps, but you will hardly feel anything. Once the surgeon has prepared the lenticule, he or she uses the laser to cut a small opening of no more than four millimeters, through which he or she releases the lenticule and carefully pulls it out. The small incision closes by itself after the correction, so it does not need to be sutured. No special post-operative precautions are necessary. You will probably be amazed – as will most other patients – at how quickly the operation is over and that you hardly felt a thing. An eye bandage is not necessary, but sunglasses are recommended. No driving is allowed immediately after the procedure.

4. After the Presbyond Treatment

You should not rub your eyes after the procedure. You will also be given antibiotic eye drops to be dribbled into your eye five times a day for a week, as well as artificial tears, if needed. Normally, you can return to work after two to three days. You should also wait about three days before doing any sports. On the other hand, you should refrain from swimming and going to the sauna for about two weeks to reduce the risk of infection.

Medical check-ups take place after one day, one week and one month. Driving a car is only allowed again after a doctor’s permission, which can usually be given at the weekly check-up.
